It is what the title says. It list all tanks, armor cars, halftracks and self propelled guns in the german army during world war 2. Gives detailed specs. of the vehicle ( armor, gun, speed, production numbers etc. Gives information of the different stages of a tank class ( for a example, a panzer ivG stats and when they built the panzer ivH (next tank in class) the changes that were made. Information given is like reading a print of the vehicle. Each vehicle has a live picture and even prototypes that didn't make production lines were given a drawing. Each vehicle also was given a brief history, area of operation, division #. The only con was the history, it was brief. Tanks of world war 2 by george forty had good history but it didn't list all tanks. It did list all the nations. Combining the two books, how they were done would have been perfect. The encyclopedia of german tanks is a excellent book. Must have information book.great bookGreat book for modeling WW2 German Tanks. The Encyclopedia of German Tanks of World War Two is THE reference book for all German armored fighting vehicles of WWII. It was written by Peter Chamberlain and Hilary Doyle with editing by Thomas Jentz. These are three of the top armor historians of their era. Their work is so meticulous as to go to museums and make measurements of all the parts of the vehicles. The book follows a very simple format. It starts with the Panzerkampfwagen I to the Panzerkampfwagen VI Ausf B the Tiger II with every single variant and experimental version. Then it goes through other fully tracked vehicles, many of which were prototypes, then half tracks, armored cars, and then all the different captured vehicles that served under Germany from France to Italy to British to Soviet to American. For each vehicle there’s a standard format of manufacturer, the number of chassis built, the basic technical specifications and the armor thickness from all sides along with their angle. Then there’s a short history of the vehicle, the specific features, and its combat service. There are plentiful pictures to go along with the text as well.At the very end there’s a breakdown of the armament used in the German vehicles and the ammunition.Basically, any German vehicle used in WWII is included in this book with its most basic features and history explained. This is why it is the greatest reference book on this topic ever published and remains so even though it was published in the late 1970s. While there has been lots of new information discovered since then all the basics are right here in one solid book.I've had this book for years and there simply isn't anything better if you are interested in the technical details. Each variant is fleshed out with all the technical details and plenty of photos, as well as production numbers. There is an allied (US/UK) version by the same authors, but without the same level of detail. This is the best photo encyclopedia of German WWII armor I have ever purchased. Great photos, information, and organization. An excellent reference work, giving very detailed information on a huge range of armoured vehicles, including some rarities.Amazing book, exactly what I needed to continue my library on WW2 vehicles. Great pictures and specifications. This has each vehicle and all of it's spin off variants listed in a logical order.
