I compared numerous online display cases for HO railroad locomotives and cars, and many appear to be similar in appearance and dimensions, but the reviews were mixed for satisfaction or quality. I picked this one, and I am extremely pleased. It’s really a beautiful cabinet! I was pleasantly surprised that mine came with BLACK rather than the advertised GREEN felt background behind the shelves, because that was what I thought would best enhance my models on display. All of the attached brass plated hardware is well fastened – there’s nothing flimsy about it. The Plexiglas in the door is very high quality and covered on both sides with factory protective covering that you peel off. It’s every bit as clear as glass. All of it is well protected in shipping, and the company takes care to instruct the recipient not to destroy the custom-shaped Styrofoam pads, giving step-by-step directions to unpacking and letting you know to reverse the steps if you want to return it. (No need for the second part of that, since I won’t be returning the case at this price and quality.) I uploaded a total of 17 photos to show the display case, how it’s mounted, and its measurements, but I don’t know how many Amazon allows. Here is some information that hopefully clarifies what’s been presented in some of the other reviews and answers to questions about whether your models will fit:Depth of Shelves. The interior depth of the shelves is consistently 1-5/8” plus another 1/8” of Plexiglas recessed out in the frame door for a total of 1-3/4” still allowing for door closure. Contrary to some reviews, you can actually put a roadbed along with the track in this case, although you’d need to trim the width of the roadbed. And almost all HO gauge locomotives, passenger cars, and other rolling stock should fit, width-wise. Railroad locomotives and rolling stock have standard maximum widths. While you may see "Wide Loads" being escorted on the highway fairly often, railroads have too many clearance standards to allow wide-load deviances. If you get the cork roadbed that is sold in strips that you split apart lengthwise, the inside starts with the two outside beveled edges stuck together with a 45° miter cut (Life-Like Curvable HO Road Bed - I don't know if it's sold anymore), then just use 1/2 of it with the beveled edge out. Put the track on top of that 1/2 roadbed -- it'll balance okay since most of the track will be on the cork -- and there's plenty of depth to accommodate it. (Edit: After doing a bit of repositioning of track and models, I found the need for a small 90° angled pick tool to straighten the cork roadbed and track in relation to the shelf edge -- worked wonders.) Also, in the door, the Plexiglas is mounted about 1/8" out from the shelves, so you have a little extra room where the "glass" is. For other roadbed, if you can cut it lengthwise so the cut side is in the back, no one will ever know. This wouldn't work for one-piece track molded on roadbed, because the track is centered and can't be moved closer to the glass front. Also, on the bottom shelf, you can’t really see any roadbed, because the bottom of the door frame is higher than the roadbed would be. See the two pics that show the cork roadbed with door open and closed as well as the two that show depth of shelf and recess of Plexiglas with the ruler.Height of Shelves. I found just enough room to spare to put a Proto 2000 E6 locomotive (2.1”) on Atlas track on top of cork roadbed. I’m hoping, when I get a passenger dome car (2.2”) that it will fit. If not, I’ll just remove the cork roadbed for the applicable shelf. You can see in the photos that there’s plenty of room for most cars – just barely enough for a high circus flat car – and I found it pretty easy to manipulate the models onto the rails. If it’s useful, here are some other relevant HO measurements:Variability of Dimensions. The exterior dimensions of the case I received 3 days ago are 37" W x 17-78" H x 2-3/8" D. Interior dimensions are 36-1/16" Wide x 1-5/8" Deep + 1/8" extra room where Plexiglas is recessed out from the shelves for a total depth of 1-3/4" to accommodate train width. Each shelf, top of one to bottom of the next higher one, is about 1-1/2", but they do vary: On mine, one shelf (biggest) is 2-5/8" (2.625") in height, one shelf is 2-9/16" (2.5625") on one side to 2-5/8" (2.625") on the other, one shelf is 2-9/16" (2.5625"), two shelves are 2-1/2" (2.5"), and the smallest shelf is 2-1/2" (2.5") on one side to 2-7/16" (2.4375") on the other side. I’ve included three photos showing a ruler with shelf heights.Mounting on Wall. I just received this case 3 days ago, and it now comes with heavy-duty wall mounting hardware. It still has the 4 sawtooth hangers screwed (very firmly) to the back of the frame at the top, but instead of using nails or other less secure means of fastening, it has 4 steel mounts (see photo I found somewhere else, but each has 2 rather than 4 holes), each having 2 deck screws with wall anchors (I used a 15/64" drill bit -- 1/4" is probably the right size). When you line these up at the right 4 spots in the middle of where the sawtooth hangers will go, using a yardstick, level, and pencil, it will then be a very solid, but snug, fit. It was so snug, in fact, that I had to use a screwdriver to pry the protruding tab of the mounts out a little (pry using leverage against a screw, not against the drywall!). Once all four sawtooth hangers are fully interfaced with the wall mount tabs, it's a solidly fastened cabinet. The shipping weight of the cabinet is just over 15 lbs, but I weighed it at 11 lbs. But even at 15 lbs, I estimated that with 18 locomotives (6 shelves x 3 big engines), each weighing 1-1/2 lbs, the maximum weight that needs to be supported is only about 42 lbs. Just one of the modern nail-type wall hangers available at the store is rated at 30 lbs or more, so the mounting hardware described above would easily handle more than 50 lbs. See included photos showing mounting hardware.Opening Top. Hinges are at the top, and the top lifts up over the cabinet and rests against the wall, IF you leave at least 18" of free wall space above the cabinet. That way you have trouble-free use of both hands to position and adjust models. See included photo showing the lid open and resting against the wall above the case. The reviews do not lie. This display case is very nice and good quality. Shipping preparation is incredible and very securely packaged. I purchased two of these and they look great. It was a little tricky installing the included wall mounts but not too bad, just slow and requires some patience. I will likely purchase another case or two as needed :)This is the third case of this brand that I have purchased to store and display HO-scale locomotives. The case is sturdy, attractive, and large enough to hold about 18-20 locomotives. The item description on Amazon suggests that it LOCKS--it does not; it has LATCHES. I did not use the hanging system that came with the case; instead, I drilled three holes through the back of the case in order to drive mounting screws into wall studs. (This requires a stud finder, and some careful planning and measuring.) I covered the screw heads with felt bumper pads to protect my locomotives. I also rigged up a hook-and-chain to hold the case open while using two hands to place and remove locomotives. The case is extremely well-packed for shipping. All three that I have purchased arrived in perfect condition. Before buying the display, I read a review that was extremely helpful that included the measurements.I collect N scale and I recommend this display (HO,N scale) over the one that is strictly for N scale....it will give you more room in the shelves if you want to add a background for each train.Great Product, you can not beat this product for the money.Nice quality and tastefulI will be buying others.TYGood looking, well built display case. Nice stained finish. I actually have six of them now.I purchased this display case for my father. He says it is absolutely beautiful and exactly what he was looking for. Had to read the instructions a few times and then it was easy to install. No fear the case will fall off the wall. The case fits the cars perfectly. The look is simple with no wasted space. I'm displaying H/O steam engines not a display case. I would buy it again and will when I buy more engines. Great product for the price.
